Nightwish was formed in Kitee (Finland) in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and lead singer Tarja Turunen. A year later, they released their debut album (Angels Fall First) and then recruited drummer Jukka Nevalainen, and bassist Sami Vänskä to complete the line up. The band’s been through many line up changes since then and it currently consists of Tuomas, Emppu, Marco Hietala, Troy Donockley, and Floor Jansen. Over the years, their musical style has spanned many genres including symphonic metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music which combines the heavy drums and guitars of metal with different elements of orchestral classical music, such as symphonic instruments, choirs and sometimes a full orchestra), gothic metal (a fusion genre that combines the heaviness of heavy metal with the dark atmospheres of gothic rock), and power metal (a subgenre of heavy metal that blends traditional metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context, and is also characterized by a more uplifting sound). Their sound draws parallels with that of fellow female fronted groups the Gathering and Lacuna Coil. They’ve had a stellar career with 8 studio albums.
